It’s tornado season in Oklahoma. What can I do to prepare in case one hits our area?

Permalink 04/08/09 08:26 , Categories: Library Web Site , Tags: government documents, tornados, weather

The library’s Government Documents section has a weather page with several links to agencies with information on preparedness for tornados and other severe weather.

To find these, click the Government Documents icon in our Research tab. At the bottom of the page is a link for Resources by Subject or Type, which includes a category for weather.

The Weather page has links to services such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service. Also included are sections for weather preparedness from the CDC, FEMA, and others about tornados, floods, wildfires, etc.

For further assistance, contact us at 596-7977 or ask us your question at http://www.tulsalibrary.org/askus.

I want to go fishing, but first I have to tune up my mower, mow the yard, AND fix my boat motor. Do you have manuals for a Toro mower and a Mercury Outboard?

In addition to TCCL’s Clymer print repair manuals listed in our library catalog, library card holders can also access all Clymer manuals from the comfort of your own home.

Find it here at Small Engine Repair. After clicking on Small Engine Repair and entering your library card number, choose Outdoor Power Engines > Walk-Behind Mowers > Toro and finally select your specific model until you have the complete manual.

The same for your boat motor. Choose Marine/Boat Motors > Mercury > your Model. It’s that easy. The last step is to have a fun summer - - - after you mow the yard.

Can the library help me file my taxes?

Well, the short answer is no, the library does not assist with tax preparation or offer tax advice. However, we do have some resources that may make tax season a little more bearable for you.

First, all library locations should have free basic Federal tax forms and instructions, including 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ. Most other forms can be found and printed from the Internal Revenue Service website. The Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) provided a limited number of 511 state tax forms, which can be obtained at the Central Library. Other state forms are available at the OTC website.

Secondly, two local agencies, AARP and Community Action Project continue their annual free tax assistance service at various locations around Tulsa County, including community centers, churches, and yes, even a few libraries. To find a complete list of locations, dates and times for this tax help, as well as information on what to bring and other requirements, go to this page in out Tulsa Organizations and Services database.

I need help creating or updating a resume. Does the library have any resources to assist me?

Permalink 02/24/09 08:23 , Categories: Database, Catalog Feature , Tags: job, learnatest, learningexpress, resumes

The library provides access to an online course through our LearningExpress/LearnATest database that can help you create either a standard or a custom resume. The course will tell what a resume is meant to achieve, explain the three main types of resume formats, and allow you to compile information you need to create your own resume.

Upon finishing the exercise, you will have the option to download your resume in PDF format and either print or download it to a flash drive or disk. You’ll also have a text document which you can paste into a word-processing program and format/edit on your own.

This course takes approximately 120 minutes to complete, but you can save your progress in your account if you don’t have time to do it all in one sitting.

As LearningExpress/LearnATest is a totally interactive resource, you must set up your own personal account – which can be done either at the library or from home/work. If you don’t finish your resume, you have 30 days to complete it. All of your answers are saved in your My Center page, which ensures complete privacy.

LearningExpress/LearnATest => Log In with your personal account information => click Job Search & Workplace Skills => click Job & Career Success

For books to check out on resumes perform a Subject search in the library catalog of resumes employment for a complete list.
