Does the library have typewriters or fax machines that the public can use?
Unfortunately, the library does not have a public fax and no longer has typewriters. However, our Tulsa Organizations and Services (or TOS) database has compiled a list of places in the Tulsa area that do provide these services. You can find the full list here.
Note that the Tulsa County Law Library in the County Courthouse has a typewriter, and that area Fedex Kinkos locations, as well as the downtown Quikprint and Copy-Scan offer public fax. These services are available for a fee.
Also, for a limited time (the remainder of 2009), Office Depot is offering free resume faxes and copies, up to 25 single-sided pages. For details, see the link at the top of the TOS entry.
Now that I know about Interlibrary Loan (or ILL) from last month’s blog, how do see if an item is available for loan?
If you are trying to locate an item that is not available from the Tulsa City County Library, try WorldCat, the most comprehensive catalog of materials held in libraries worldwide. You can access WorldCat from the TCCL Alphabetical List of Databases webpage.
WorldCat includes books, movies, music CDs, and audio books, and you can search for items by title, author, keyword, year, and ISBN. Once you have located an item, WorldCat allows you to view the number of libraries worldwide that own the item. This will give you some idea of the availability of the item through Interlibrary Loan. If the item is only held in a handful of libraries, it may be more difficult to request through ILL. (For more information on ILL, see our blog entry from July 16th, 2009.)
Inside the WorldCat record for an item, you will see a link that says “borrow this item from another library (interlibrary loan)”. By clicking on this link you can access the TCCL Interlibrary loan system and request the item. You will need your e-mail address, library card number, and name to request the item.
I need information on copyrights and patents. Do you have any online sources that are clear and concise?
For quick reference tips, such as how long an item remains covered by copyright, check out TCCL’s online research center by clicking the Research tab, then scrolling down to the Browse Subject Guides section. Under the Government and Law heading, there is a link for Copyright.
For more information, our government documents department has very helpful information at this page on Intellectual Property. This department also offers informational programs periodically on trademark, copyright and patents and can help with basic patent searching and copyright information.
For more detailed patent searching, please contact Research Wizard.
I'm looking for a book that the library does not own. Is there any other way I can get my hands on it?
InterLibrary Loan (ILL) is a service which borrows books, videos, sound recordings, microfilm, photocopies, etc. when the requested items are not available at any Tulsa City-County Library. We borrow items from many public, academic, and special libraries throughout the country.
If a particular item is not owned by any of the Tulsa City-County Library locations, customers with a valid library card may use the InterLibrary Loan Service to request that the item be borrowed from another library system for their use. There will be a $1.00 postal recovery fee for each item borrowed using InterLibrary Loan. Interlibrary Loans may be placed online or by calling your local library.
More information about InterLibrary policies and procedures may be found online at http://www.tulsalibrary.org/ill/.
It’s over 100 degrees out and I need to cool off. Can you tell me where the nearest public pool is?
You’re in luck! The library’s Tulsa Organizations and Services database (or TOS) has a list of city and county pools that are open this summer. To find the list from our home page, click on the purple Research tab, then select the Tulsa Organizations and Services icon at the bottom of the left column. Select ‘Name of Organization’ and perform a search for ‘swimming pools’.
You will find that there are 3 county pools and 8 city pools open in the Tulsa area this summer. The page lists the name, address and phone number of each park, as well as information about admission prices. Happy swimming!
