If you’re looking for something fun – and free – to do this summer, check out your neighborhood Tulsa City-County Library. Area libraries are offering hundreds of entertaining events in June and July for children and teens to complement the summer reading programs.

Balloon artist Stephen Smith (aka Professor “B” Looney) is among the many entertainers on tap. Professor “B” Looney will create zany bugs out of balloons at several libraries. Children ages 5-12 are invited to his June performances at:

• Martin Regional Library, 2601 S. Garnett Road, June 19, 2-2:45 p.m.
• Kendall-Whittier Library, 21 S. Lewis, June 21, 3:30-4:15 p.m.
• Broken Arrow Library, 300 W. Broadway, June 24, 1-1:45 p.m. and 2-2:45 p.m.

Cartoonist Steve Quinn will teach teens how to draw original and favorite cartoon characters. Quinn will give away each picture by drawing names from a hat. Plus, he will select one boy and one girl from the audience to draw in caricature. Quinn’s “Cartooning Class” for teens is scheduled in June at:

• Schusterman-Benson Library, 3333 E. 32nd Place, June 23, 3-3:45 p.m.
• Maxwell Park Library, 1313 N. Canton, June 25, 3-3:45 p.m.
• Kendall-Whittier Library, June 30, 2-2:45 p.m.

The children’s summer reading program, called “Catch the Reading Bug,” also features performances by magicians Brad “Bradini” Evans and Chris Capstone, ventriloquist/magician Jeff Cauthen, juggler Paul Phariss, as well as newcomers to the reading program – Sugar Free AllStars, Chippie Carmichael and his comedy-magic-juggling-balloon-twisting show, Dino O’Dell and the Veloci-Rappers, and magician/clown Dustin Reudelhuber.

The teen summer reading program, called “Metamorphosis @ Your Library,” also features a variety of free programs, including console gaming, such as Wii Sports, Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution; duct-tape crafts; scrapbooking; origami; and anime.

2008 Summer Reading Program for Teens
Continues Through Aug. 3

You must have completed sixth grade to sign up for the teen program. Once you sign up, you are eligible to win $5 QuikTrip gift cards, given away weekly at your local library. Teens who read six books by Aug. 3 will earn an acrobat pen and coupons for free:

• Admission to the Tulsa Zoo
• Cinnamon sticks from Mazzio’s Italian Eatery
• Snack wrap and bottled water from McDonald’s
• Admission to the Tulsa Air and Space Museum
• Admission to a Tulsa 66ers game
