Music Sandwiched In Series
Make the decision to kick up your heels or cut a rug, either way you will enjoy live worldly sounds during the “Music Sandwiched In” series.
Each Wednesday in September, from 12:10-12:50 p.m., Central Library’s Aaronson Auditorium, Fourth Street and Denver Avenue, showcases local artists with a knack for hitting the right notes. This free series is sponsored by Central Library’s Media Center and the Friends of the Tulsa City-County Libraries.
The series opens Wednesday with Irish music performed by Cairde na Gael, which translated means “Friends of the Gaelic.” This seven-member group bases their style on such great Irish bands as the Dubliners and the Clancy’s but with a pinch of Oklahoma to create what they call “O’kie Irish Music.”
Sept. 10 features the sassy vocals of Rebecca Ungerman with Jon Glazer on piano in this performance of memorable tunes penned by the legendary Johnny Mercer. Known as the “Southern Gentleman of Song,” Mercer incorporated his Southern roots of jazz, blues, gospel and Creole into his work. As a lyricist he worked with some of the greatest composers of the day.
Just listen to what comes of out the mouths of Lisa Stefanic, Susie Daugherty and Elizabeth Curtis, Sept. 17. The music of Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Charlie Chaplin and Stephen Sondheim only scratch the surface of the catchy songs on tap in this program.
The series concludes Sept. 24 with Susan Herndon weaving her particular brand of magic in a varied performance featuring original poems, art and songs about careers and infamy, naps and insomnia, falling tree limbs, the surprisingly short distance between loving too much and too little, outlaws and spirits, drums and flowers, trains and traveling, betrothals and betrayals, and getting lost in a Tennessee rainstorm and finding your way home.
