Library Celebrates African-American History Month in February
Celebrate African-American History Month with Tulsa City-County Library by discovering the history of quilting, seeing a historic film and watch high school students test their knowledge.
Each program will be at the Rudisill Regional Library, 1520 N. Hartford. The purpose of the programs is to recognize and honor the achievements and contributions of African-Americans.
The first program is “Quilting the African-American Experience,” Feb. 7, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Join Oklahoma City’s master quilt maker Beverly Kirk as she discusses the history of quilting. Bring your favorite quilt pieces and quilt histories to share. The African-American Resource Center, Tulsa Library Trust and Tulsa World are co-sponsoring.
The panel presentation “The Great Debaters” is featured Feb. 8, 2-4 p.m. Acquaintances of the late, great Dr. Melvin B. Tolson will share their experiences followed by a debate between community members on an exciting and topical subject. Dr. Tolson was the subject of the film “The Great Debaters.” The Friends of the Rudisill Regional Library is sponsoring the program.
See the film “The Great Debaters,” Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. A silent auction will follow the film, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of the Rudisill Regional Library. Refreshments will be served.
Feb. 28 features the 2009 African American Heritage High School History Bowl, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The bowl challenges high school teams over topics relating to African-American history. First-, second- and third-place winners will receive a trophy. All student teams will receive a certificate for participation. The Friends of the Rudisill Regional Library are sponsoring the bowl.
