55+ In the Know: Live Well, Age Smart Resource Fair

More than a dozen community organizations and several Tulsa City-County Library departments are teaming up to present “55+ In the Know: Live Well, Age Smart Resource Fair” for ages 55 and older from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12 at Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St.

Participants will visit with librarians and representatives from local agencies to learn about library resources and the wide variety of community services available for the 55+ generation. Attendees will learn about retirement planning, caring for aging parents, volunteering and other lifelong learning opportunities available.

The following organizations will have booths with representatives on hand to answer questions from 1 to 4 p.m. in the library’s Redbud Auditorium: Life Senior Services, Tulsa Area Agency on Aging, Volunteer Central, AARP, Alzheimer’s Association, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Northeast Active Timers, Long Term Care Authority, Senior Companions and Meals on Wheels. Tulsa City-County Library booths include the Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service, Volunteer Office, Genealogy Center, Outreach Services, Readers’ Library, Research Center and computer classes.

The following presentations are scheduled at the resource fair from 1 to 1:45 p.m.: “Genealogy at Tulsa City-County Library,” presented by Kathy Huber; “Life Senior Services,” presented by Carol Carter; “Hospice Help,” presented by Marty Mitchell of Good Shepherd Hospice; and “Tulsa City-County Library’s New Web Site.”

From 2 to 2:45 p.m., a representative from Consumer Credit Counseling will teach participants how to wisely handle money issues during the Golden Years; a representative from the Tulsa Area Agency on Aging will explain how to handle the unusual situations that arise when grandparents raise grandchildren; and Barbara Tricinella will share easy tips for staying happy and healthy. Plus learn how easy it is to access government documents on the library’s new Web site.

From 3 to 3:45 p.m., a representative from Legal Aid will teach participants how to protect themselves from being victims of identity theft; attorney Matt Matheson with Riggs Abney will discuss commonly asked questions about preparing a will and the advantages of a living trust; Charlotte Chavez, an agent with Dream Journeys Travel Agency and Vintage Newsmagazine columnist, will give tips for savvy 55+ travelers; and Marquay Baul, financial advisor with Arvest Asset Management, will discuss the basic concepts of wealth management and other estate-planning issues.

Also, if you wonder what your grandkids are talking about when they mention Wii, join us from 1 to 3:45 p.m. in the library’s Maple Room to see a demonstration of this popular game or try it out.
