The colorful cultures of Asia will come alive as Tulsa City-County Library presents the seventh annual Asian-American Festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 6 at the Martin Regional Library, 2601 S. Garnett Road.

Celebrate and learn about the customs and traditions of China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries in Asia with entertaining, educational events for the entire family.

The festival is sponsored and funded by the Tulsa Library Trust, with assistance from the Tulsa City-County Library Staff Association Recycling Proceeds Fund. Admission is free. Food concession is provided by India Palace and Guang Zhou Dim Sum Restaurant.

The festival kicks off at 10:45 a.m. with a vibrant Dragon Dance, featuring a 70-foot dragon from China, followed by martial arts demonstrations by Ten Tigers Kung Fu at 11 a.m., Shikara Ashi Te Ryu at noon, and Martial Arts Academy USA at 1 p.m.

The festival also features authentic dance and music performances, including a Chinese folk dance by China Roses at 11:15 a.m.; traditional Indian music and classical Indian dance by the Sanskriti School of Dance at noon; and classical Indian dance by the India Association of Greater Tulsa at 1 p.m.

Art presentations include a hands-on introduction to manga drawing for teens at 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.; a manga exchange and discussion from noon to 2 p.m.; and a Kyoto art workshop for youths and teens at 1:15 p.m. Plus, origami instructor Cathy Terry will teach the Japanese art of paper folding from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Other presentations include a Shakuhachi bamboo flute performance at 11:30 a.m. and a hands-on workshop at 1:30 p.m., as well as a demonstration of the Japanese tea ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Children ages 4-6 will learn dances and songs in Japanese and English, starting at 11:30 a.m.

The festival also features interactive educational booths with crafts for kids, temporary tattoos, name translation and henna painting, plus authentic arts and crafts booths.

Local martial arts instructors and their students will demonstrate kung fu, karate, tae kwon do and other traditional Asian disciplines throughout the day under a big tent outside in the back of the library. Ten Tigers Kung Fu, Shikara Ashi Te Ryu and Martial Arts Academy USA are scheduled to perform.

Numerous activities and presentations are scheduled indoors throughout the festival, including interactive educational booths featuring crafts for kids, temporary tattoos, name translation, henna painting and origami instruction. The festival also features authentic arts and crafts booths. Food concession is provided by India Palace, located at 69th and Lewis. Admission to the festival is free.
