Credit or Debit?

Credit or Debit?

When it comes to Social Security’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI), it appears debit is the new way to go.

The new debit card program will take the place of traditional checks, with SSI recipients receiving payment directly to a debit card. The card can be used at ATMs and for purchases in which individuals will have the ability to receive cash back. Almost more importantly, the card will save individuals without bank accounts the exorbitant fees associated with cashing SSI checks at check cashing outlets.

Information about the new debit card program is accessible at the Social Security Administration’s website. Click this link to view details from the SSA’s Frequently Asked Questions.

Beneficiaries interested in receiving benefits via debit card should contact Comerica Bank by telephone or via the Internet at:

* Toll Free 877-212-9991 (Mon-Fri 7AM - 11PM CST to enroll) or,
* www.usdirectexpress.com (24 hrs per day, 7 days per week)
